18 May - 19 May 2013 – Karumba Point

Josh and I went for a walk up to the point this morning and Sami rode her scooter and Zoe was on her penny board.  We stopped into a small café for coffee and morning tea and just a bit of relaxing (as usual).  After heading back to the van, Josh finished some final touches to the boat and finishing gear and we were ready to take the boat out to catch dinner.  First up we stayed near the shoreline but after a while here we hadn’t caught a thing so went on the move.  Josh steered out towards the our channel and stopped about two markers out and anchored here.  Zoe was whinging about not wanting to fish but we talked her into just throwing a line in.  And lucky we did, she was first to catch something.  After sitting out here for well over an hour, Zoe had caught 7 fish, Sami had caught 4 and I had caught 3.  Josh was last with only 1 fish but his was a catfish instead of a grunter like the rest of us and his was the biggest (but not by much).  We didn’t keep any of the fish that we had caught as we believed they were probably all too small but we all had a lot of fun out there today.  After pulling in the boat and putting it away we headed for the pool for a swim and back to the van for an early dinner.  After dinner we walked back to the Sunset Pub just in time to see the sun setting.  Unfortunately, there was a big ship out in the Gulf passing by right at the time of enjoying the sunset.  Zoe and I had our Parra jerseys on tonight as Parra was playing the Dragons.  No need to mention as you probably already know, Parra lost.  Sami even wore her jersey and they too got smashed the night before.  We had a great night just enjoying a few drinks and playing darts with the kids at the pub before heading back home for the night.

The following morning, Zoe went to reception with the laptop for a while to play Moshi Monsters and then Josh took them for a ride on their scooters, etc again.  I spent the morning having another go at making sushi rolls (I still have trouble getting my rice to stick together).  After lunch we took the boat out again to try luck.  Again, we caught lots of little fish (although I’m sure some were over the length limits and we could have kept) and threw them all back.  The tally for today was Megan 7, Sami 4, Zoe 3 and Josh 2.  After running out of bait we packed up the fishing and went up the Norman River to see if we could find our first wild crocodile – but again no luck.  We took the boat in and while Josh packed it all away, us girls all went for a dip in the refreshing pool.  We were invited to our neighbours van tonight for a farewell drink.  Jan and John had spent a few months here (as do many others) and were packing up and heading back home to Moloolaba tomorrow.  They had many of their Karumba friends around (about 30 in total) and were nice enough to invite us along too.  It was a lovely night chatting to all these new friends as well as learning a bit more about fishing – may be one day we will return to try and catch our first Barra?  The kids spent the night in the van watching a few movies, something they haven’t done much of lately.
