We said goodbye to our lovely
hosts this morning and moved camp this morning – this time to Lancelin. We grabbed a spot on the top level of the
caravan park opposite a few cute little permanent vans. After setting up, we hit the pavement for a
walk about town. Just outside the
caravan park was a little café/bakery/lolly shop so we hung around here a
while. This afternoon, Josh and I wanted
to set off for a longer walk and the kids weren’t interested so we left them
behind locked in the caravan. We were
gone about an hour and walked nearly all of town, well at least to the other
end of the shops and back along the beach.
There were a few emergency vehicles along the beach at this stage as
they were rescuing a car that had rolled on the sand. It looked like the driver was fine but the car
was trashed to the point where they were shovelling everything (including sand)
to the inside of the vehicle. It was
pretty overcast, cold and windy so a good night to stay indoors.
The next day was lovely and sunny
without a lot of wind, the perfect opportunity to put the boat in and take it
across to a little island not too far from the mainland. Funnily enough it was called Lancelin Island. We drove down to the beach, winched the boat
of the roof and we were ready to go. It
didn’t take long to get to the island and we were the first ones there for the
day. We dragged the boat up onto the
sandy shore and dug in the sand anchor.
We followed a built pathway to the top of the island and read lots of
signs about the birdlife found on the island.
It wasn’t that hot but Josh went for a dip into the turquoise water
while the kids and I watched on. We took
a stroll up the beach from one end of the island to the other, saving a few
little puffer fish by throwing them back into the ocean (that was the kids’
idea). There was a rocky area at each of
the ends so we did a bit of exploring but not finding much except for a little
crab hiding in a crevice of the rocks.
After finally kicking a footy around for a while in the sun, we hopped
back in the boat and went back to the mainland for some lunch at the bakery in
town and then headed to the big sand dunes out the back of the town. It was hard work climbing to the top of the sand dune and we were quick running down. There were some girls having a great time on their sand boards but boo hoo cos we didn't have any. Late this afternoon, we went for another long
walk around the town again, this time with Zoe on her penny board and Sami on
her scooter, and we were all having our mini races along the way. Fortunately the kids didn't complain too much about how far we had to walk...
