We packed up this morning, left the
vans behind and went for a drive to Pigeon Hole Lookout to finish our El
Questro experience. It was another steep
climb but not as far as some of the others we’ve done. Whilst at the lookout we cooked up some bacon
and eggs for breakfast while enjoying the views. Once done we went and hooked up the vans and
drove on along the Gibb River Road (GRR).
The kids had a bit of fun in the back doing some craft as we drove and
not too far along we came to the famous Pentecost River Crossing with the
Cockburn Ranges behind us. Josh calls it
the “money shot”, the one that you see in all the magazines when they do a
write-up about the Gibb River Road. Shaun
crossed it first and dropped Liz on the other side before returning so that Liz
could get some photos and whilst doing so I jumped in with them so that I could
film our car crossing it. Unfortunately
(or some might say fortunately) the river wasn’t that deep this year so it
wasn’t difficult to cross at all. We
continued on our way, not far at all, to Home Valley which is another fairly
big tourist stop over. There didn’t seem
to be as many people camped in here, but the benefit was that we were able to
hook up to a powered site, and there was a pool. The kids raced over for a swim while we set up
the van and then we joined them. It was
lovely and refreshing. We had a relaxing
afternoon by the pool and then back at the camp having some nibbles and drinks
before cooking up dinner and settling in for the night – and it was nowhere as
cold as it was at El Questro thank goodness!
Our Monday at Home Valley was one
of utter laziness. There are walks that
you can do here and I shouldn’t comment seeing as though we did none of them,
but from what we heard, there was no prize such as a waterfall at the end which
is our reason for not doing them.
Instead, the whole family had spurts throughout the entire day of lazing
by the pool, doing a bit of reading and the kids had a bit of fun at the very
cool playground in the van park. The
kids wanted to go for a fish late this afternoon, so Josh tried to take them to
the creek nearby but it didn’t look very safe so late this afternoon, in time
for sunset, we jumped in the cars and drove to the other camping ground which
is also part of Home Valley but it runs along the Pentecost River. We could see a crocodile sitting on the other
side of the river so weren’t keen to venture too close to the water. Matt threw a line in but it didn’t last long
after his shoes got stuck in the mud.
Instead we all just sat along the river watching the sun go down and
enjoying some cool drinks. There were
others there, some who were actually standing in the river – crazy!
