19 July – 22 July 2013 – Broome

Again, the van was all packed up.  Before leaving town we pulled into the local Butcher (Sampey’s) to stock up the freezer;  then we were back on the road.  We managed to make a quick call in to the Derby Prison Tree (so we could compare it with the one near Wyndham) before heading onto the beautiful town of Broome.  Fortunately, we were able to book into a caravan park – peace of mind as majority of the time this is something difficult to do.  It was about a 200km pleasant drive along a bitumen road (thankfully) and it was easy to find the caravan park.  We set up home and went out exploring a little.  One of the first places we found was Matsu’s Brewery – somewhere that Josh had been itching to get to.  It has been a long time since he’s enjoyed a mango beer so we pulled up a table.  After the first cold beer, he was immediately buying a jug – he now had the taste for it again!  We left around 5pm and I jumped in the driver’s seat, something I haven’t done for months.  After having a stop off at the local jetty, we were racing with the sun to find a good spot to enjoy the sunset.  We ended up finding the dirt road that takes you to Gantheume Point and pulled over just in time to watch the sun set behind the horizon – so pretty!  Being Friday, there was footy to watch – and we were back in the land of the living where we had reception.  Josh got to watch a bit of this and afterwards, the girls and I sat up watching The Squeakle – a lovely family night in.
This morning Josh and the girls went to find somewhere to wash the car.  All they found was a garage that had a gernie but at least that got a lot of the dust off and Josh may have a chance to keep his clothes a little cleaner.  As they were leaving, they ran into Madee, the young girl who we’ve met at Lake Argyle and the Bungle Bungles, also staying here at the caravan park.  Most of the day was spent at the van catching up on the blog and then we escaped our box to the sunshine of Broome.  Josh had spoken to his cousin Venitah and arranged to catch up with her and her husband Phil, later this afternoon overlooking Cable Beach.  We got there early and became an onlooker of a wedding before meeting up at the Sunset Bar.  It was great to meet them both and we had a fantastic afternoon and night catching up on life.  The kids also really took to them and were sad when it was time to leave – I’m sure we will meet up again before moving on though.
We had missed the Broome markets yesterday morning so after breakfast today we headed in.  We had a bit of a roam about but only came away with some massive licorice pieces for the kids.  Afterwards, we wandered past the old outdoor Sun Cinema and then through Chinatown before picking up a few things at Coles.  Back at the van, we forced the kids to sit down to an hour or so of schoolwork before packing up some food into the car and heading to the beach to meet up with Madee and her family for a BBQ on the beach.  There were a lot of people in their 4WD’s on the beach, and some with normal sedans.  We also noticed that it was a popular place to bring your dog.  We invited Venitah and Phil to join us too, and the kids were really excited to get to play with their two dogs, Cloud and Rory.  We parked a long way back from the beach, thanks to Jo and Steve’s insider knowledge from the night before.  By the time the sun was setting around 5.30 – 6.00pm, many people had started to move their cars back to avoid them ending up in the ocean!  We too moved ours around 6.30pm to about another 30 metres back... incredible how quick the tide comes in.  It had actually gotten a bit cold by this stage and I really should have done the same as the kids and brought a jacket.
So, another week began and we decided that, as it was Monday, that the kids should get stuck into schoolwork seeing as though we were already a week behind.  We had lots of whinging but Zoe got stuck into hers and Sami eventually followed, even though her attention was only held in about 10 minute batches – so Sami!  It was a long and frustrating day and I think we were all thankful when it ended.
