28 – 30 January 2013 - Tamworth to Tenterfield

So, you know all those wet weather reports that you’ve been hearing about throughout Queensland and New South Wales?  Well they wet weather has also hit Tamworth.  The weather was miserable all day Monday so we had our usual sleep in, and then got stuck into school work.  We had just started and Josh stepped out for lunch with friends so I tried to kick on with a bit of school maths work with the kids – oh what fun!  Fortunately, Josh wasn’t gone long so he came back and gave the kids a swift kick to push them along.  All in all, it was a pretty uneventful day really.

The Tuesday was much the same.  Admittedly we started the school work a little earlier in the day but it was a really torturous day.  Zoe didn’t want to record her news onto the computer because it wasn’t going to be up to her high standard, so the crocodile tears started and the self doubt kicked in.  Eventually, after quite a bit of consoling, she managed to spit something out and record it – ready to send back to her teacher.  Sure it wasn’t great, but at least it was done.  Sami too was getting a bit over her school work – this time with math’s.  She can answer ten math’s questions right in a row, but then give her a ten second break and ask her the same question again, and she will have no idea!  What is going on there???  Anyway, we went for a drive this afternoon to the Tamworth Lookout and then to got some groceries just to break up the day and then came back to school work.  Boredom set in again, so we played a few games of “44 Homes” and then continued on for a wee while until we finished up for the day.

Wednesday we were due to check out of Tamworth (which is also why we started the school work early).  Everything was dried up and packed away by 10am and we hit the bitumen once more.  We made tracks north until noon where we stopped at Guyra.  The kids had been watching movies in the back of the car up until this point and thankfully we found a great park which had a big flying fox and massive climbing gym to amuse the kids.  We arranged lunch while the kids ran amok and by this stage quite a few others had stopped at the park to join us with their own lunch.  I think we spent about an hour chatting before we headed back to the car to continue on the journey.  We drove on through many roadworks, and passed through Glen Innes and Deepwater before finding somewhere to stop for the night.  We are currently about 11km south of Tenterfield at a place called Bluff Rock Rest Area (yay, free accommodation) and the rest area is pretty full.  We have gotten the kids to do a small amount of school work (even though they’ve been at it for hours – their concentration is appalling) and we’ve had a chat to a few of the other campers staying here for the night.  Some of the folk have set up a camp fire nearby so Josh and I will shortly be putting the kids to bed and heading over for more chat time…. we are loving our road trip!

27 January 2013 – Tamworth Country Music Festival

We woke around 10am today!!!  The sleep-ins are just getting later and later!!  It rained most of last night and drizzled all day.  It has actually been a bit of a reprieve from the hot weather we’ve been enduring in this hot country town.  We made the most of the weather today and lazed about for most of the day by just reading the paper, I read a bit of a book, we watched a bit of tv, the kids played cards and we simply relaxed… aaahhh!!  We had tickets today to go to the Longyard Hotel and watch the Bushwackers – my all-time favourite country band.  They’ve been around for about 40 years now and when I was a little girl my folks had their album which I used to play over and over.  Josh too has also become a bit of a fan!  Even though it was raining the place was PACKED!  Fortunately, we got their just in time to grab four chairs only just out of the rain and right next to Chris E.  Thomas and Tamara Stewart.  From what I can gather after seeing them today, this gig is one which they do every year on the day after the Golden Guitars and I would advise anyone and everyone to try and get to this gig at least once in your lifetime!  Not only did we get to see the Bushwackers, but they also had their friends get up on stage to sing with them including Kasey Chambers, Shane Nicholson, Beccy Cole, Tamara Stewart, Chris E and Harry Hookey to name some of them.  Out of all the fantastic acts that we’ve seen this week in Tamworth, this has definitely been my favourite!!  What a shame the TCMF has had to end… it has just been too much fun.  We will definitely try to plan to be back here as often as possible – and all of you should try to get here at some stage too, whether country music is your thing or not – just saying!!!

26 January 2013 – Tamworth Country Music Festival

Happy Australia Day!!!  I think Tamworth has to be one of the best places to spend Australia Day and we will definitely be back for future Country Music Festivals.  We spent most of today wandering around the streets of Tamworth with the Edwards family today and finally settled into The Albert pub for a few drinks in the afternoon.  Late in the afternoon, we headed back to get dolled up for the ultimate country music night of nights, the Golden Guitar Awards!  The four of us along with Mark & Erica went out for dinner before heading to the TRECC for the big night.  We had missed the stars walking the red carpet but we had our turn on it anyway.  Troy Cassar-Daley won I think a total of four of the big awards including Male Artist of the Year and Album of the Year and the Female Artist went to Catherine Britt.  Chris E Thomas missed out on the New Talent of the Year Award as that went to Chelsea Basham.  Unfortunately, John Williamson didn’t get up and perform tonight as he apparently had quite a bad cold?  However, a few highlights of the night was having Geoff Mack there (he wrote the song “I’ve Been Everywhere”) as he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement award, but then the Sunny Cowgirls sang the song as the finale and Lucky Star (who first recorded this song) came out to sing a verse along with them.  It was a great finish to a top night!

25 January 2013 – Tamworth Country Music Festival

Another lazy start to the morning!  I played hairdresser this morning giving both the kids a hair cut as well as trimming Josh’s hair.  We packed some rolls for lunch and hit the road bound for Lake Keepit.  If I remember right, I went on a school camp to Lake Keepit in year 5 or 6 (if any school friends read this, please correct me if I’m wrong) and we got to do a bit of canoeing and abseiling.  There wasn’t really much there apart from the lake, a lovely caravan park, a few boat ramps and a nice (but small) water play area for the kids.  It kept them amused for a while but we didn’t stay long.  We ended up heading back into town for a few hours and back to the Post Office Hotel as Chris E Thomas had a daytime gig on.  We stayed there for quite a while, sitting front row just on the pub floor watching them sing and they really wowed us!!  Before too long we had to head off as the Star Maker finals were on.  It was a hot and muggy night so there was no dressing up for this concert… shorts and t-shirt were it (not that we have much else in our tiny cupboards to choose from).  We made our way to Toyota’s VIP area and took our seats and not far into it, our good friends Mark and Erica and their boys joined us along with further friends Trevor and Helen and their kids.  The Star Maker for 2013 was finally announced (Kaylee Bell) after all the performances and the following big concert was about to start.  We had some great acts perform including O’Shea, The Wolfe Brothers, The McClymonts and then the main act of Lee Kernaghan.  They were all brilliant.  Lee sang a song with his sister Tania which was outstanding, but then also brought in a 13 year old busker from the streets who played the banjo.  She was just awesome but I unfortunately can’t remember her name at the moment.  I’m sure she will pop up again at Tamworth festivals and most likely become pretty well known in the country music industry.  I bet that young girl can’t wait to get back to school to tell her friends about her school holiday experience!!
