The rain had stopped so we packed and left Mission Beach
today, bound for Cairns. It was after
lunch time by the time we arrived at our lovely park which is just north of
Cairns called Crystal Cascade Caravan Park.
It is fantastically clean and the amenities are some of the best I’ve
seen for a while. After setting up camp
we headed around the corner to Freshwater Creek. The water was lovely and clear with hundreds
of rocks covering the base of the creek.
There was a large rock in the middle of the creek and the depth of the
water in parts around it were quite deep.
The kids had a bit of fun jumping off the rock into the cool refreshing
water. I on the other hand spent only a
few minutes in before sitting on the sideline watching. We left there and went for a drive to the
Crystal Cascades which feeds the Freshwater Creek. It was a 1.2km walk up a nice wide pathway
before we reached the end. It is
suitable to swim in the river along the first half of this pathway but signs
further up strongly advise that you shouldn’t do so up further. Going by what we saw this would be due to the
unsafe drops off some of the rocks and the intense rapids as they head
downstream. Sure enough, not far down
stream from the original waterfall, there was a bunch of tourists swimming. They may think they are invincible but I
think they need to re-evaluate!
Sunday the 14th turned out to be a really hot
day. We had a lazy morning and did a bit
of grocery shopping before coming back to the van and relaxing for a few hours. Then we jumped into the car and headed to the
airport to pick up my Dad. He arrived
around 1.45pm so from there we went into the city of Cairns and had a bit of a
walk around. After a relaxing few hours
back at the van and watching some footy, we returned to Cairns to check out the
night markets and have dinner.
